THE ANCIENT CIVILIZATION OF THE CHACHAPOYAS AND MACHU PICCHU

JUN 22 Depart from U.S.A. to Lima. Upon arrival you will be met at the Lima's international airport by our representative and transferred to our hotel located in Miraflores, the modern area of Lima.
JUN 23 This morning after an early wake up call and buffet breakfast we fly to Cuzco. Upon arrival, transfer to our hotel. The rest of the morning will be free to adjust to the altitude. Afternoon visit the city of Cuzco with its places of interest as: Koricancha, the main square, the Cathedral and some numerous interesting streets. Then visit the nearby ruins of Kenko, Puca-Pucara, Tambomachay and the impressive Sacsayhuaman Inca fortress, which overlooks Cuzco. (B)
JUN 24 Free day in Cuzco to observe the Inti Raymi festival. (B)
JUN 25 Morning guided tour to the Sacred valley of the Incas with the traditional Andean towns. Stop in the village of Pisac, to visit their celebrated and colorful indian market. After lunch at a local restaurant , visit Ollantaytambo fortress. Return to Cuzco. (B, L)
JUN 26 Transfer to the station to board the train for a three-and-a -half hour journey to the fabled "Lost City of the Incas" : Machu Picchu. Visit the Inca citadel followed by lunch. Overnight at Hotel. (B, L)
JUN 27 Free morning to explore the citadel on your own. In the afternoon, board the train to return to Cuzco. Overnight. (B)
JUN 28 Transfer to the airport for a return flight to Lima. Arrival in Lima and transfer to our hotel. This afternoon we will explore the modern and colonial areas of Lima well-known as the "City of the Kings". Then visit the world famous Gold Museum. (B)
JUN 29 Morning flight to Chiclayo and transfer to Gran Hotel Chiclayo. Afternoon visit the Royal tomb of a Moche Lord located in Sipan. It is considered one of the most important archaeological discoveries i n the last 20 years. Then we will visit the Bruning Museum which houses an extraordinary collection of pottery and gold artifacts from ancient cultures of the north coast. (B)
JUN 30 Morning departure from Chiclayo by private air conditioned car/bus. Late afternoon arrival in Chachapoyas. Box lunch and dinner included. Overnight at a hostel (B, L, D).
JUL 01 Visit Kuelap, a spectacular pre-Inca walled city hidden atop a precipitous mountain. Although Kuelap was discovered 60 years before Machu Picchu, it is not as well-known to the outside world. Nevertheless recent amazing discoveries in nearby areas that relate to Kuelap and to its history have captured the attention of archaeologists, international magazines and film companies. Box lunch. Following your visit to Kuelap, we return to Chillo for overnight. On the way, we will have the opportunity to observe the burial towers of Macro, an outpost of the Chachapoyas culture built into cliffs overlooking the Urubamba River. Its unique location allowed for contact via signal fires with the fortress, high above in the mountains and visible through a cleft in the valley hills. Dinner and overnight (B, L, D).
JUL 02 Excursion to visit the colorful funeral buildings of Revash perched on a ledge up high on a cliff. Return to Chillo for one last night. Dinner and overnight (B, L, D).
JUL 03 Morning drive towards Leimebamba. On the way we will stop at Las Palamas, where a light trek will start to La Congona, a spectacular settlement pattern of the Chachapoyas. In this area it was discovered outstanding friezes and defensive towers still virgin in the jungle. After picnic lunch, we continue to Leimebamba for dinner and overnight at a local hostel. (B, L, D)
JUL 04 Morning visit the museum of Leimebamba where the pre-Inca mummies recently discovered in the Laguna de Los Condores are kept. Then continue drive to Celendin, crossing two cordilleras and several different habitats, such as cloud forest, agricultural land, desert-like areas and the Marañon Canyon. Box lunch on the way. Overnight at Celendin Hotel (B, L, D).
JUL 05 Begin the journey to Cajamarca, where we will stop for lunch in this lovely colonial town. Afternoon excursion to the Ventanillas de Otuzco, a pre- Inca cemetery that features a gallery of secondary burial niches (located 5 miles from the city). Upon our return, we will enjoy a tour of Cajamarca. Farewell dinner and overnight. (B, L, D).
JUL 06 Depart Cajamarca in the morning via private car/bus for the overland journey down through the mountains to Trujillo. Early afternoon arrival and visit the colonial city of Trujillo. Overnight.
JUL 07 Visit the beautiful Moche Sun and Moon temples, then continue to the beach for a relaxing lunch in the town of Huanchaco, a charming fishing village. After lunch we will visit Chan Chan, the sprawling ruined city of the Chimu culture. Late afternoon transfer to the airport for a flight to Lima. Arrival, reception and transfer to our hotel.
JUL 08 Transfer to the airport for a return flight to USA.
